The Berkeley Hotel in London

At the turn of the 19th century, The Berkelely Hotel stood at the corner of Piccadilly and Berkeley street. It was bought by Richard D'Oyly Carte in 1900, and in 1901 became part of the Savoy Group. D’Oyly Carte and his family stayed in control for the next 100 years.

In 2005, the Savoy Group, including The Berkeley, was sold to Quinlan Private, currently know as the Maybourne Hotel Croup. Always ahead of its time, The Berkeley installed air conditioning and double glazing in the 1920's. The aging building could however only handle so much improvement, and in 1972 The Berkeley moved to its current site in Wilton Place, Knightsbridge. The main new feature of the new Berkeley was its rooftop pool, which is still unique among London hotels.

The wood paneling and decorative carvings from the original Berkeley is still visible in the hotel's famous Blue Bar, where stars such as Madonna and Leonardo di Caprio like to hang out. As the name suggests, the Blue Bar is particularly famous for its color scheme. Designer David Collins made sure the carvings were carefully covered and preserved before it was covered by a striking 'Lutyens blue'.
